[ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] THE ONGOING RECESSION has raised a troubling question for otherwise resurgent Keynesian economists: How can the American economy keep getting worse under the intensive care of an interventionist economic team almost universally praised for its brilliance? The answer may be that the Obama administration is dealing with a fictional economy, one that bears little resemblance to the economy the rest of us inhabit. And when the difference between fact and fiction becomes too apparent, they just make stuff up. Herewith, five big lies the administration loves to tell and the mainstream media (with some notable exceptions) love to repeat: 1. Bold government action staved off a Depression, saving or creating 1.5 million jobs. “Just remember,” Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner said on November 1, 2009, “a year ago today, last year, you had markets around the world come to a stop. Economic activity just stopped, came to a standstill, like flipping a switch.” Geithner implies that the American business climate improved substantially in the first year of the Obama administration. In fact, nearly every indicator, from employment to freight transport to rents to retail sales to real estate, has headed steadily south. In some cases, such as unemployment, the numbers have been far worse than the Obama economic teams worst-case projections. In others, such as real estate, the weakness of the market is masked by expensive government support, including but not limited to the unkillable First-Time Homebuyer Credit, an assault on loan underwriting standards (see Lie No. 2) by the Federal Housing Authority and the government-run mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, and the completely opaque $75 billion Home Affordable Modification Program (HAMP).

FM
World Charities , a not-for-profit “rock roll” charity dedicated to
global health care, is please to announce that on this Wednesday, March 10th
at 7:30PM is staging a major event at New Yorks music landmark, Webster Hall . ” FM Down Under “,
hosted by comedian Chuck Nice (VH1s ” Best Week
Ever “), will feature Australian sounds from rockers The Kin and Tamarama
(Universal/Motown). Opening the event will be New Yorks own Beatle-esque
Mister Gio.

FM World Charities, founded by noted record producer Eric Gast , has championed
numerous health care initiatives since its inception. FMs involvement with
the Warped
Tour in 2008 shed light on a serious health concern that is often
overlooked: skin cancer. FM screened over 6,500 youth in 46 cities
throughout the US and Canada, and 700 needed follow-up. According to Gast,
“By reaching out to kids at a common level as musicians and peers rather
than doctors in lab coats with scary melanoma pictures on the wall, we won
them over.”

Australia has the highest skin cancer rate in the world. Approximately 2
out 3 Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer by the age of 70. This
Wednesdays ” FM Down
Under ” event embodies a special brand of music meets awareness.

Australia has many major music tours this Summer. Gast said, “We plan on
having a presence on as many tours throughout the world as possible with
all of our health care initiatives. We are honored to be working with The
Kin in Australia, not only are they a phenomenal band, but they are very
altruistic and spiritual, traits that are synonymous with FM”.

Electricians and care-workers are as intelligent as professors and merchant bankers, claims a new report.

According to the Bodies of Knowledge report from the Centre for Real-World Learning (CRL) at the University of Winchester , treating practical and vocational educated individuals as intellectually second rate has no basis in science. Practising a vocation is as demanding of intelligence, ingenuity, flexibility and social skills as any profession.

Commissioned by independent education foundation Edge , the report proves that it is wrong to distinguish between “academic” and “practical” learning in the simplistic way that the educational system currently does.

Drawing on cognitive science and neuroscience, Bodies of Knowledge determines what it takes to become an expert in any line of work and demonstrates that the mind and body work together to develop knowledge, understanding and skill. An example cited in the report is that a mechanic working out how to fix an engine uses similar thought processes to a doctor making a medical diagnosis.

The authors have developed a new framework of learning and conclude that anyone who wants to become expert in their field will need to use the same habits and frames of mind.

M86 Security , the global expert in real-time Web and email threat protection, today introduced the M86 Web Filter and Reporter, a single appliance which delivers M86s best-in-breed URL filtering as well as real-time monitoring and reporting. The appliance provides the same filtering, monitoring and reporting capabilities that previously required three appliances.

M86 Web Filter and Reporter, specifically built for small and medium-sized organizations, offers a cost-effective means of securing a network through one appliance. This approach reduces initial expenses, server rack space, and expenditures related to essential maintenance and electricity costs compared to products which rely on separate appliances for each filtering, monitoring and reporting functions.

“M86 understands the economic pressures organizations, particularly small and medium sized businesses, face on a daily basis,” said Werner Thalmeier, vice president, product management, M86 Security. “The ability for a single appliance to achieve what two or three once accomplished provides these entities with a lower total cost of ownership without sacrificing performance or compromising security.”

With the ability to conduct real-time monitoring as well as provide detailed and customized reports, M86 Web Filter and Reporter is uniquely deployed passively rather than as a proxy avoiding the introduction of bottlenecks or latency into the network. Easy to set up and manage, this appliance-based solution eliminates the need for separate servers or operating systems. M86s support of the hardware, software, and updates associated with this Web filter and reporting tool removes much of the potential deployment and management issues for system administrators.

This filtering and reporting tool also employs application control by signature using signature detection to block over 125 types of streaming media, gaming, peer-to-peer, remote desktop and Instant Messaging apps such as MSN Messenger, Limewire and GoToMyPc. M86 Web Filter and Reporters application control helps organizations demonstrate compliance, mitigate security risks, prevent data loss and manage productivity more effectively.

In the popular press, grape extracts have been touted as miracle compounds that can do everything from cure cancer to reverse aging. These claims may be a little premature, but beneficial substances within grapes have been found to provide a variety of benefits for overall health and wellness. Sports scientists are now starting to demonstrate that grape components can benefit physical performance and recovery, as well. Grapes contain a multitude of beneficial substances classified as polyphenols. One you may have heard a lot about is resveratrol. This phytochemical, found mainly in the skins and seeds of the grape, has been shown to help prevent certain types of cancer and heart disease, as well as extend lifespan, bolster muscle endurance and even help with fat loss. Polyphenols act as antioxidants. During exercise, free radical formation can result in excessive muscle damage that can impede performance and recovery. Antioxidants help to neutralize free radicals, which may help reduce muscle damage while maintaining strength. Grapes are considered to be one of the most concentrated sources of antioxidants among all fruits and vegetables. THE STUDY French researchers conducted a study in which 20 elite male athletes from various sports received a grape extract or a placebo every day for one month. Following the one-month treatment, each subject had a two-week break, and then received the alternative treatment for another month. During the entire study, all athletes continued with their normal intensive training routines. Several tests were conducted during each study period to measure changes in overall power, antioxidant status and muscle damage. THE RESULTS When subjects took the grape extract their antioxidant levels were much higher compared to when they received the placebo treatment. Muscle damage was also found to be significantly lower during the grape extract treatment. The improvements in antioxidant status and muscle damage didnt translate into improved muscle power in all of the athletes tested, but a subgroup of handball players (10 of the 20 subjects) did gain increased overall power. The researchers also found that the subjects who experienced the least muscle damage due to grape supplementation had the greatest overall improvements in muscle power. THE DOSAGE Take 200-500 milligrams of grape extract, or grape-seed extract (Vitis vinifera) standardized for at least 80% polyphenols, in the morning and about 30-60 minutes before workouts.
I was a skinny kid who had a rough childhood. Health and fitness–more specifically bodybuilding–have been important outlets for me in handling the many things Ive been through in my life. Although I did some weight training as a kid, it was when I became a U.S. Marine Corps Body Bearer that I was “bitten by the bodybuilding bug.” Unfortunately, over the next several years, I spent a lot of time overseas, but it didnt stop me from continuing to hang on to ray dream of becoming a bodybuilder, which came to fruition in 2009. I set my sights on competing as a heavyweight in the 2009 All Forces National Military Bodybuilding Championships on October 10, in Tampa, Florida. I connected with Tim Gardner and joined his team, Team Body*Tech, based out of Tampa. At the time, I was in Iraq working as a contractor, so we communicated on a weekly basis via phone and e-mail. When I returned to the States, we jumped into precontest mode. I was very motivated, because so many people over the years said that I didnt have what it takes. Although I didnt carry the level of mass I needed for my height, I felt my conditioning would make up for some of that. I had started to do a lot of online social media networking before I returned to the United States and, over time, I created a large friend/fan base of people who began following and supporting me. It was a great feeling and, as it grew closer to the competition, I felt a huge sense of pride. Everyone was able to watch my transformation take place as I posted pictures, and blogged about my life challenges and the pursuit of my dream to become a bodybuilder.

North Bridge Venture Partners Joins Current Investor, HLM Venture
Partners, in Strategic Financing Round

WOBURN, Mass. — SensAble
Technologies, Inc®, a leading provider of 3D modeling software,
haptic devices and dental restoration design and fabrication solutions,
announced that it has received an $8 million investment to propel sales,
marketing and engineering efforts for its digital dentistry product
line. Existing investor HLM
Venture Partners led the round and was joined by North
Bridge Venture Partners, both of whom are headquartered in the
Boston area, and have extensive expertise with medical device company
funding.

SensAble will use the new capital to better compete in the $3 billion
worldwide market for dental restoration equipment and supplies. In 2008
SensAble introduced the SensAble
Dental Lab System, an award-winning solution that helps dental labs
of all sizes migrate to the use of digital tools in scanning, designing,
and fabricating dental prosthetics and oral devices. Since then,
SensAble more than doubled its dental
business revenues and won key strategic customers worldwide. The
additional funding will allow SensAble to build upon its initial success
in a sizable and growing market.

“As dentistry goes digital, the dental lab business is in the early
stage of a massive transformation – with less than 20% of all dental
labs currently leveraging digital technology – while demand is on the
rise as aging baby boomers need more and better dental restorations,”
said Curt Rawley, chairman and CEO of SensAble. “It’s an enormous market
with multiple opportunities to improve dental lab productivity and
quality of output with solutions that integrate a wide range of newly
advanced technologies. We’re pleased to have the support of two
high-caliber venture capital firms who share our vision and will help us
achieve these goals.”

Symptoms One of the best ways to work your abs is with a cable crunch. You can place more overload on your abs by increasing the weight, which instigates better ab development (i.e., growth). To do the cable crunch, get on your knees while holding a rope attached to a high-cable pulley. Keep your thighs nearly perpendicular to the floor, your butt out and your torso parallel to the floor, then crunch down and in, bringing your elbows to your knees as you keep your butt up. Keeping your butt up, however, puts pressure on your knees and can hurt. Rx Do the seated cable crunch. To do this exercise, place a flat bench under the rope attachment of a high pulley with the end of the bench facing the pulley. Straddle the bench, facing the weight stack. Grab the rope attachment with both hands using neutral a grip and hold the rope in front of your chest. Crunch down, bringing your elbows toward your knees. Squeeze your abs for a second, and slowly return to the start position and repeat for reps.

Unique Four-Layer Structure for High Cutting-Speed and Smooth Cut
Surface

TOKYO — Oki Electric Cable (TOKYO:5815) today announced the launch of
OS-UZ Wire, a zinc-plated wire for Wire-type EDM.1 Sales
and shipment of OS-UZ Wire starts in April.

Featuring a unique four-layer structure for high-cutting speed and
smooth cut surface, the new OS-UZ Wire was developed to meet the needs
of the metal parts industries and die mold industries. OS-UZ Wire will
improve manufacturing productivity, reduce wire consumption, and cut
machine operation costs.

Conventionally, heat diffusion wires2
are used to improve the cutting speed of Wire-type EDM. However, the
complex structure of heat diffusion wires makes them more costly than
brass wires. To address this cost issue, Oki Electric Cable uses a brass
core covered with a zinc-rich brass layer, to which it applies a zinc
layer and a thin special coating layer, forming a four-layer structure.
This unique structure and innovative manufacturing methods allow Oki
Electric Cable to offer the OS-UZ Wire at prices lower than that of
conventional heat diffusion wires.

OS-UZ Wire improves rough-cut speed by around 30% over
conventional brass wires. At the same time, it offers improved
positioning accuracy3 and smooth
cut surface of work-pieces. The special coating helps
protect against corrosion and improves its shelf-life, while an
innovative newly-developed wire drawing technique results in less metal
powder adhesion problem4 compared
to conventional brass wires.

It is as though we have brought the beautiful sky outside, inside. The fun thing to watch is their first reaction when they look up and see them. Thank you so much,” said Rita Michael, Morris Elementary. “A lot of our kids cant go outside and cant even get out of bed, so it has a calming effect on them. It also gives them a sense of the outdoors, where they havent been able to go in a period of time,” said Lourdes Rosario, RN, ANM of Pediatric Special Care Unit, Arnold Palmer Childrens Hospital.
Being born and raised on a farm in Iowa, it has been enjoyable teaching my students about an Iowa artist. Grant Wood was born on a farm near Anamosa, Iowa. He spent the first 10 years of his life there. He began drawing when he was a boy, using burnt match sticks like charcoal. Later, he studied art in Minneapolis, Chicago and Paris. Eventually, he returned to Iowa, where he drew the things he knew and loved best. He loved the farmland, the rolling hills and the fields of corn, beans and haystacks. He loved the people who farmed the land. Once he painted a picture that had a building with a gothic window in it. The two familiar people in front were his sister and his dentist. This was the painting that made him famous: American Gothic.

Three years on from the introduction of tougher in-car mobile phone rules, many motorists are still flouting the law, according to figures published today.

Swinton, the UKs leading high street retailer of car insurance , has seen a 42% increase from 2008 to 2009 in the number of quotes for people convicted of using a mobile phone while driving (CU80 conviction code).

Following official RoSPA statistics showing that 78% of crashes were caused by driver inattention Swinton is warning motorists to beware of the potentially dangerous effects of using a mobile while driving.

Steve Chelton, Insurer development manager at Swinton, said: “We are seeing more and more motorists using mobiles phones while driving, not only to make or receive calls, but also to text, surf the internet and even check messages on Facebook and Twitter. We would like to advise all of our car insurance customers that this is illegal, even when in stationary traffic or stopped at traffic lights.

“We urge all motorists to adhere to the rules by not using a hand-held mobile phone while driving. There are plenty of alternative options, including hands-free kits and Bluetooth headphones.

Byline: Genna Reece A BIG thank-you once again to all our readers for your support and donations over the past week. This week we are appealing for cat scratching posts and robust dog toys. Both our shelters are currently housing a large number of greyhounds. Many people think greyhounds need lots of exercise but this is a myth. Greyhounds love nothing more then to cuddle up in front of the fire after two 20-minute walks a day. They are very placid dogs. If you think a greyhound could be for you why not visit us at our shelters and have a look around. Two weeks ago our Benton shelter received a small tan lurcher puppy. He was very friendly and was placed in a small room with a heat lamp to keep him warm. On the afternoon we spotted Blaine running around the shelter and came to the conclusion the door must not have been shut properly. The next day we found him running around the shelter again. After putting him back in the room we kept a closer watch. After 10 minutes or so staff saw him jump onto the window ledge, open the window with his nose and jump out. We decided to name him Blaine after David Blaine the magician. He is now looking for a special home. We are now in the early stages of planning our next Fun Day at Benton North Farm, which will be on May 3. More details will follow soon. We will be collecting on March 13 at the Forum Shopping Centre, Wallsend, between 11am and 3pm. Why not pop down and visit us? UPDATE: Jack the mastiff cross and Sheeba the mature queen featured last week are still looking for their forever homes.

But the plant will still emit millions of tonnes of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide, and could end up wasting vast amounts of heat. “This proposal is just not good enough to be built in Scotland,” said Dr Richard Dixon, the director of WWF Scotland. “With our tough climate targets we cannot afford to be locking ourselves in to new power stations that will be major carbon emitters.” He said the Cockenzie gas plant would waste enough heat to continuously boil a quarter of a million kettles. Ministers should force Scottish Power to make use of the heat by piping it to nearby communities, he argued.

ATTEMPTS are underway to send military veterans to special “care” units instead of prison if they commit a criminal offence. The key figure behind the controversial move is the SNPs Angela Constance, who represents Livingston at Holyrood. On Friday, she held a high-profile summit at the Scottish Parliament with criminal justice agencies and veterans charities to test support for her proposal, which would see a secure care unit established for traumatised war veterans as an alternative to custody. The MSP believes there is a “moral responsibility” to support veterans both during military operations and when they return home, even if they find themselves on the wrong side of the criminal justice system. Tom Fox, Scottish Prison Service (SPS) spokesman, confirmed that prisoners were not routinely asked if they were in the armed forces. The SPS has estimated that it has 121 veterans in Scottish prisons. Critics, including Mrs Constance, say the SPS figures are an “under- representation”.

IVE only been in Los Angeles for two hours and Im already talking like a Valley Girl. The view from my hotel is so spectacular it deserves the “Oh my gods” I start saying as soon as I look out across Hollywood. Our first hotel, the Andaz West Hollywood, was a treat. On glitzy Sunset Boulevard, it was so cool we didnt have to queue up at the reception desk to check in. Instead, a concierge with a laptop and a megawatt smile whisks you through the process in the lobby. Is he marking time before he becomes a Hollywood star? Of course he is. They all are. Just like the tour guides at Universal Studios where we saw sets for Desperate Housewives, Psycho, War Of The Worlds and Jaws.

HARRY Potter has worked his magic on Floridas struggling tourism industry as British holidaymakers flock back in their thousands. Visitor numbers to the US state – the UKs sixth favourite holiday destination – dropped by four million last year thanks to the credit crunch and the value of the pound collapsing against the dollar. But Floridas new Harry Potter theme park, due to open this spring, is already helping to drive up summer bookings. Trevor Davis, of tour giant Co-operative Travel, says family bookings are up seven per cent compared with last year. “The better exchange rate is also helping families looking for greater value with the relative weakness of the dollar giving UK holidaymakers up to 15 per cent more spending power.”

LOS ANGELES — Thomas Properties Group, Inc. (Nasdaq: TPGI) reported today the results
of operations for the quarter and year ended December 31, 2009.

“Last year was one of the most difficult ever for the real estate
industry and the impacts were felt across the board in all sectors,”
said James A. Thomas, Chairman and CEO. “Even in this environment, we
were able to increase cash flow as evidenced by improvements in the
fourth quarter, and we favorably restructured some of our debt and loan
terms to better position our properties for the future.”

The results of operations presented in this release include a
consolidated net loss for the three months ended December 31, 2009 of
$(7.7) million or $(0.30) per share compared to a consolidated net loss
of $(7.7) million or $(0.33) per share for the three months ended
December 31, 2008. The consolidated net loss for the year ended December
31, 2009 was $(21.6) million or $(0.86) per share compared to $(5.5)
million or $(0.24) per share for the year ended December 31, 2008.
Included in the consolidated net loss for the three and twelve months
ended December 31, 2009 are pre-tax, non-cash impairment charges of $4.4
million and $13.0 million, respectively, related to the Murano
condominium project, and $14.0 million and $16.0 million, respectively,
related to joint venture investments.

After tax cash flow (ATCF) for the three months ended December 31, 2009
was $2.5 million or $0.10 per share compared to after tax cash flow of
$0.5 million or $0.02 per share for the three months ended December 31,
2008. The increase in ATCF for the quarter ended December 31, 2009 over
the prior year period resulted from an increase in gains from sales of
condominium units at the Murano property and a reduction in interest
expense, partially offset by reductions in property net operating income
and net revenues from the investment advisory management, leasing and
development services business. ATCF for the twelve months ended December
31, 2009 was $8.2 million or $0.33 per share compared to ATCF of $22.5
million or $0.95 per share for the twelve months ended December 31,
2008. The reduction in ATCF for the year ended December 31, 2009
compared to the prior year primarily resulted from a decline in gains
from sales of condominium units at Murano and a reduction in property
net operating income. The Company defines ATCF (a non-GAAP financial
measure) as net income (loss) excluding the following items:
non-controlling interests, deferred income taxes, non-cash charges for
depreciation and amortization and asset impairment, amortization of loan
costs, non-cash compensation expense, straight-line rent adjustments,
adjustments to reflect the fair market value of rent, and gain from
extinguishment of debt. ATCF is further described in note (c) to the
financial statements below.

Thomas further stated, “We have accomplished a number of financing and
capital transactions, reducing our consolidated debt balances by $69.7
million at December 31, 2009 compared to December 31, 2008. Also,
subsequent to year end, we negotiated on behalf of the California State
Teachers Retirement System (CalSTRS), our partner in City National Plaza
in downtown Los Angeles, for CalSTRS to acquire all $219.1 million of
mezzanine debt on that property. CalSTRS will contribute this debt to
the partnership’s equity, reducing the leverage on the property from
$568.0 million to $348.9 million, all of which is first mortgage debt.
We are in discussions with CalSTRS to obtain an option to participate in
the loan purchase, on or after the maturity of the mezzanine debt, based
on our current pro rata share of 25% of the existing City National Plaza
equity. We are confident that the increased equity, together with the
property’s substantial cash reserves, will facilitate the refinancing of
the mortgage later in 2010.”

THE Queen has agreed to host a public pop concert at her Sandringham estate. Will Young will sing on August 7 in what is expected to be a sell- out show. Last year thousands attended a concert there by opera singer Katherine Jenkins. But Will, who won TVs Pop Idol in 2002, will be the first pop star to perform at the 20,000-acre Norfolk estate. Tatyana Hristova * As a teen in Bulgaria I had the propensity to gain weight, and I was overweight by the time I reached my early 20s. In 2000 I was diagnosed with Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome, a heart condition that can cause an extremely fast heart rate and trigger ventricular fibrillation, a leading cause of sudden cardiac death, and exercise wasnt recommended. Yet I was in physical pain due to my bodyweight of 200 pounds, and I felt even worse looking in the mirror. My best friend who worked out a lot helped me decide to start exercising in spite of my doctors advice. I began a fat-loss program in 2004 in which I worked up to 40-60 minutes of cardio six days a week and four weightlifting sessions weekly; I changed up my routine every two weeks and ate four strict meals a day. Now Im on a program to gain muscle, so I limit my cardio and eat more protein. I love to use free weights and try new workouts, and Ive added elements of martial arts to my training to make it more fun and challenging. Im healthier than ever–Ive lost 75 pounds of fat and gained 23 pounds of muscle–and my heart condition no longer exists. American physicians say my diet and exercise regimens helped immensely. Living and feeling healthy is my biggest achievement, and I hope to someday compete in bodybuilding. Now Im 36, and my fear of the gym has become a passion and an addiction. I thought I had reached the stars with my transformation, but then a German friend showed me how much more power I had inside. For all those who struggle with their weight, I say, “Theres no such thing as cant.” I just kept imagining the outcome I wanted to achieve and this motivated me to continue.

Deduction Qualifications Eased for 2009 with National Relief Program

LOS ANGELES — An often-overlooked deduction may help turn a major property-casualty
loss into a tax time gain. The standard deduction for unreimbursed
casualty and theft losses allows taxpayers to include certain uninsured
property losses among their itemized deductions.

In the past, qualifying for the disaster loss deduction meant that the
taxpayer had to have sustained substantial financial losses. Insurance
deductibles or gaps in insurance coverage — from fire, flooding or
earthquake, for example — could qualify for tax deductions.

For a short time, however, homeowners with losses from any federally-declared
disaster may also qualify for additional benefits under federal
legislation available only for the 2008 and 2009 tax years. The National
Disaster Relief Act of 2008 allows all taxpayers, not just those who
itemize, to claim a deduction for catastrophe losses regardless of their
income level. The legislation also eliminates the requirement that
taxpayers qualify for the deduction only if the disaster loss exceeds 10
percent of their adjusted gross income, plus $500. If the property is a
trade or a business, slightly different rules may apply, so it’s
important to seek assistance from a qualified tax preparer.

FARGO, N.D. — Salesmen in Fargo are hawking products with names like the Muscle Wall and the Sandbagging Buddy. Emergency workers in Keokuk, Iowa, are planning to barricade the water treatment plant with limestone boulders. The farmers cooperative in Quincy, Ill., is moving grain inland to keep it dry. Spring could bring disastrous flooding again to the Upper Midwest, government forecasters are warning. And folks along the Red, the Mississippi and the Missouri rivers are taking precautions, especially after calamities last year and the year before. The National Weather Service said heavy snow cover and ground that is already saturated could lead to severe flooding in as little as a few weeks. Exactly how severe will depend on how fast the snow melts and how heavy the spring rains are. In Fargo and neighboring Moorhead, Minn., an area of about 200,000 people, the chances of major flooding were projected Friday at about 90 percent. The probability of record flooding was put at 19 percent. Elsewhere across the Upper Midwest, the threat is less dire but still serious.

SALT LAKE CITY — Wildlife officials in eastern Utah have killed 26 bighorn sheep stricken with bacterial pneumonia to keep the disease from spreading to other animals. The sheep are part of a small herd east of Dutch John, near Flaming Gorge. The Goslin Mountain herd — estimated at about 40 last year — was formed after sheep from Montana were brought in 2004 and 2007.

A 50-year-old gentleman came to my clinic recently for a checkup. He had a few health problems necessitating medication, chief among them being severely high blood pressure. He does not take any medicine currently, however, because he does not have insurance and cannot afford to continually take it. One of his medical problems is severe social anxiety, which further increases his blood pressure. And before he realized that his problem was anxiety, he was self-medicating through smoking and drinking. He is now fully addicted to tobacco and alcohol, both of which, again, worsen his blood pressure. Despite his problems, he wants to improve his health and, consequently, his life. He is willing to sacrifice some of his small salary for medication. Fortunately, we found him two appropriate medications on the Walmart/Target $4 drug list. The scientifically supported standard of care for a patient before starting medication for either of these problems is to do some blood tests, to rule out certain causes and to monitor what effects the disease may have already had on specific organs. These tests typically cost around $500, give or take. For obvious financial reasons, he refused them. Physicians will then typically meet with a patient a month or two after starting new medications to monitor progress, assess for side effects and see if dose adjustment is necessary. He agreed to return in one month, but it is possible that he will not. He has started medicine in the past without following up or getting refills due to high cost.

NO ONE EVER ASPIRES to be one-dimensional. Just as youd never want to be known for having a huge upper body and no leg development, you probably dont want big muscles that arent strong and powerful, or strong and powerful muscles that cant endure a set of more than 15-20 reps. We dont want you to be a one-trick pony, either. After all, having functional muscles means being strong, powerful and built to last, not just big. Enter the MF DO-IT-ALL PROGRAM, which combines all the benefits of power and strength training, muscle-building and endurance into one routine. This six-week plan will help improve your overall conditioning, so no one aspect of your training is a weak link. In your checklist of physical attributes, this program does it all. * Each workout starts with dynamic stretching, not the static variety in which you hold a stretch for 20-30 seconds. Dynamic stretching has you perform rapid movements through an exaggerated range of motion (ROM). Think arm circles, arm swings, running butt kicks and other rapid moves that your high school football coach had you do at the beginning of practice. Therell be no traditional hurdler stretches or other stretch-and-hold exercises for a couple of key reasons: For one, static stretching has been shown to reduce strength by up to 15% when done preworkout; and two, dynamic stretching can enhance strength and power when performed at the beginning of a training session. But dont just go through the motions on these stretches. Do each rep through a full ROM and in an explosive manner. For example, dont let momentum do all the work during arm swings. Rather, initiate each circle by explosively contracting your pecs, shoulders and back. Think of these exercises as working sets, not just a warm-up that you breeze through with little focus.
* DELAYED-ONSET MUSCLE SORENESS (DOMS) is a double-edged sword. On one hand, muscle damage and soreness promote intracellular repair processes that make your muscles bigger and stronger. On the other hand, when DOMS is extreme, it can limit your range of motion and affect how often you train. Enter BounceBack, a blend of proteolytic enzymes, cur-cumin and phytosterols from avocado and soybean oils, resveratrol and vitamin C. Researchers from the UCLA School of Medicine (Los Angeles) recently reported that in a small study of 10 men and women, 30 days of BounceBack supplementation significantly reduced pain and tenderness induced by Smith machine squats. A small improvement in range of motion (knee flexion) was also noted, along with trends for decreases in serum markers of muscle damage. * CREATINE CONTINUES TO IMPRESS. In addition to improving muscle strength and size, bone health and even cognition in vegetarians, it now appears to help lifters recover their strength faster after a hard workout. Researchers from Australia, Baylor University (Waco, Texas) and Tasmania teamed up to study the effects of creatine monohydrate administered five days before and 14 days after a standardized lower-body resistance-training session (four sets of 10 reps of the eccentric-only leg press, leg extension and leg curl). Five days before exercise, subjects took about 20 grams of creatine and 84 grams of glucose or a placebo. Fourteen days later, they took about 7 grams of creatine and 28 grams of glucose or a placebo. The effects of creatine were dramatic: a 21% greater recovery of strength and 84% less muscle damage compared to the placebo group. This study underscores the importance of daily creatine supplementation, especially on “off” days, to accelerate recovery from intense weight training.

A MANCHESTER UNITED fan thrown out of the Carling Cup Final after a row over two anti-Glazer banners says Wembleys stewards could have sparked a riot. BRITISH Gas is threatening to axe 5,000 jobs and two call centres, unions said last night. The energy giant, under fire for a record pounds 595million profit on the back of crippling winter fuel bills, has secret plans to slash the number of back office staff, they revealed. In a new blow to their 17.5 million customers battered by high heating costs in the worst winter for 30 years, British Gas are facing a possible strike. The GMB, the companys largest union with 10,000 members, are sending out ballot papers on action this weekend. Sites at risk include Stockport, Leicester, Cardiff, Southampton and Edinburgh. Colin Fleming has waited several years to make an impression in the Davis Cup but yesterday he made up for lost time as he and Ken Skupski put Britain in a winning position in their Europe/Africa Group II tie in Vilnius. Flemski, as the pair are affectionately known on the tour, survived a courageous challenge from Dovydas Sakinis and Laurynas Grigelis to win 6-0, 6-7, 7-5, 6-3 and put Britain 2-1 up. Having most of his family, plus a travelling brigade of fans from Linlithgow who did their best to drown out the locals inside the Vitus Gerulaitis Memorial Tennis Centre, to support the AEGON GB team clearly helped their cause. But they were fully deserving of their win, even if it took longer than they might have expected. When they raced through the first set it looked as if they would cruise to victory but in the end, the way they shrugged off the loss of the second set to eventually clinch a convincing triumph gave captain John Lloyd more pleasure than if they had breezed home.

Think you cant get a GOOD LEG WORKOUT at home? Think again
James Bulgers family are understandably the most vocal about wishing to have this information. Its natural that the victims of the ruinous crime will forever be tormented by every aspect of it, and being kept in the dark concerning the whereabouts and activities of the two killers, now 27-year-old men, must form part of that pain. Perhaps, they think, they might have already encountered Venables or Robert Thompson on the street without knowing it. How can they be sure they havent sat beside one of them at a football match or queued behind them in the supermarket? Perhaps the Bulgers unconsciously hunt in the sea of faces every time they are confronted with a crowd, or maybe that subconscious search among strangers is instead a longing to see the face of their own son, now forever lost. Who can be sure? But while their deepest motivation for wishing to be informed about Venables must remain mere guesswork on our part, the fact remains that they do not have the legal right to know. The reason for this is quite clear. Informing the victims family could lead to a breach of anonymity, intentional or unintentional, and the law has been tasked with keeping the new identity of the two murderers secret. So who else is demanding that this law be broken? Ah yes. The Sun newspaper. It wants us to sign a petition to put Venables back on the front pages where he belongs. Oh, and the Daily Mail. And Carol Vorderman, bizarrely, judging by her peculiar, shouty indignation on last weeks Question Time. But why? Well, we cant speak for Vorderman, as she was unable to give an intelligent reason why outing Venables would be a good thing for anyone involved, so the origins of her strident insistence will have to remain a mystery. But The Sun and Daily Mails agenda is at least crystal clear. It would sell more newspapers.

Dear Annie: I am 49 years old and have been a “flexitarian” for 10 years, with fish being my primary protein source. My question is this: When I go to other peoples homes for dinner engagements, should they provide a fish entree (for me), should I be satisfied going vegetarian for the meal, or should I bring my own? My friends usually provide for me, as do my in-laws. But my parents and siblings do not. Even at holiday gatherings, I bring my own entree while the others are eating prime beef. Dear M.F.: Most flexitarians are willing to try meat on occasion. We would consider you a pescetarian — one who eats fish but not meat. Those who know about your food choices should make some adjustment when they invite you. However, you cannot demand it. Your family members seem particularly unaccommodating, but they are entitled to serve what they wish. Most vegetarians and pescetarians can find plenty to eat in the side dishes. It is fine, however, to bring your own entree if your hosts do not object. Dear Annie: How do I deal with chain smokers in the workplace? My office has a no-smoking policy, and our state recently passed laws to that effect, but we still must endure people smoking one cigarette right after the other.

“There mister, there,” shouted an elderly Iraqi man, his quivering hand pointing at a mangled torso on the ground. The bodys severed head and limbs lay scattered around the street and pavement, along with small pieces of smouldering rubber and charred metal. It was all that was left of the car and its driver. Nearby, in another scorched pick-up truck, four Iraqi policemen, whose vehicle had been rammed, lay torn and bleeding from shrapnel wounds caused by the blast. “Welcome to Baquba,” said an American soldier coming up alongside me. “Not much left of the bad guy, eh?” he added casually, before strolling off while wiping the dust from his wraparound sunglasses. What had been billed as a pre-election Peace Day gathering of local leaders and US military officials had just been about to start when the suicide car bomber struck. Baquba has always been a bad place when it comes to violence in Iraq. Suicide bombers are still hard at work there. On Wednesday, three suicide attacks, including one on a hospital emergency room, killed at least 32 people in this northern city, just days before millions of Iraqis prepare to go to the polls in a crucial general election that many believe is pivotal to Iraqs future. In the last few days of campaigning, 52 people have been killed, including three yesterday along with 50 wounded in Najaf after a car bomb exploded. Each and every one of these deaths acts as a stark reminder of the terrible price Iraqis still pay for each faltering political step forward the country tries to take.

OnePoint Patient Care, a national hospice pharmacy services provider, announced today the launch of OnePointRx, an advanced new online tool that helps hospices better manage their patients care by making terminal diagnosis-based reporting, individual patient dispensing data, detailed consultation notes and CoP compliance documentation more quickly and easily accessible than ever before while enabling them to manage their drug spend.

“We are thrilled to have designed a tool that offers hospices a level of customization and interactivity that better matches their unique day-to-day management needs, as well as their patient and therapy-level clinical needs,” said Jeffrey S. Hohl, president and chief operating officer of OnePoint Patient Care. “OnePoint Patient Care is proud to offer the ability to run custom reports and analytics not found in any other reporting system industry-wide.”

Today, most hospices do not receive dispensing-level patient data in a timely manner and are unable to see reports that are custom-designed to meet their unique needs. Instead, most pharmacy benefits managers (PBMs) provide hospices a standard suite of reports that have been developed over the years for the commercial health insurance market. With OnePointRx, hospices get customized dispensing-level patient data — and much more — in a timely and easily accessible manner. This allows physicians, nurses and other caregivers to assess not only a patients active drug regimen, but also their prescription fill history, so they can adequately assess compliance, manage outcomes, explore alternate drug therapies and reduce costs.

“We are always looking for new ways to help our hospice partners provide the highest quality care and comfort to their patients, so when we identified a huge gap in the reporting services hospices were receiving, we developed OnePointRx to fill it,” said James A. Otterbeck, chairman and chief executive officer of OnePoint Patient Care. “With OnePointRx, our hospice partners now have timely access to pharmacy and cost data that will allow them to make adjustments to patient treatments that can improve their care and reduce drug costs. OnePointRx is just the tip of the iceberg — we are exploring additional online services that will bring about further efficiencies for our hospice partners.”

OnePointRx provides access to a wide variety of reports, which are available around the clock from any web-enabled computer. The reports are designed to meet the needs of various constituencies that manage patients and hospice operations, including administrators, physicians and nurses. The reports include:

BDI Pharma, Inc. (BDI), the fastest growing national distributor of biotech therapies, will continue accepting pre book orders for the 2010 – 2011 flu season, as recent recommendations provided by the FDAs Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee suggest that manufacturers include the H1N1 strain in the upcoming seasonal flu vaccine. Due to these recommendations, BDI anticipates an uptake in pre book orders.

“Due to last years H1N1 pandemic, this past flu season proved to be one of the industrys most challenging in recent history. As manufacturers shifted their attention to the production of H1N1, the seasonal flu vaccine became increasingly scarce” said Jennifer Jacobson, VP of Corporate Programs for BDI. “The importance of pre booking became fundamentally clear when healthcare providers that booked with us early received their orders in full, thus avoiding the challenges faced by others who waited until the season began.”

The Fraser Institute, one of Canadas leading public policy think-tanks, today released its annual report card on Ontario elementary schools, an invaluable tool for comparing the academic performance of schools across the province.

“The report card is the only easily accessible, objective tool that helps parents assess the performance of their childs school,” said Peter Cowley, Fraser Institute director of school performance studies.

The report card measures whether academic performance in a school is improving or declining. It allows parents to compare schools based on key demographic factors such as parental income or number of ESL students, and it shows the number of students not meeting provincial standards in reading, writing, and arithmetic.

“These detailed results provide parents with the information they need to ask the principal at their childrens school important questions about a schools performance,” Cowley said.

“In the spirit of encouraging academic excellence, the report card also offers educators the ability to compare the academic performance of their school to others with similar characteristics, helping them identify areas in which improvement can be made.”

Edinburghs Standard Life and Glasgow engineer Weir Group will usher in a fresh era for corporate Scotland this week when their new chief executives both outline their visions for the future as they announce yearly trading results. The two bosses will stress that they have inherited their jobs from positions of strength with robust trading news, but will be expected to step out of the shadows left by their predecessors to announce their own plans for future expansion. That is because the groups share price has done little more than mark time over the past year despite the improved trading climate with brokers at Bank of America Merrill Lynch describing them as the “ugly ducklings” of the life assurance world. “The low level of expectations should work in Nishs favour if he comes up with the right noises on future expansion on Wednesday,” commented one analyst.
ANOTHER week and another freedom of information (FOI) request triggers a political controversy. Admittedly, it was the UK legislation which led to Lord Ashcroft confessing his “non-dom” tax status, but that act, together with the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act, have become vitally important weapons with which the public can hold to account those in authority. As the architect of the Scottish legislation, my main objectives were to make the act user-friendly and help create a better climate of openness within government. The act simply requires that a request should be in writing. It doesnt stipulate any particular form, and it places a duty on public bodies to assist those who seek specific information. To date, I believe that it has been a success. Media inquiries about guest lists at Bute House dinners and use of ministerial cars were inevitable. But the father who used FOI requests to persuade a health board to change its policy on eye tests for pre-school children, and the work of Inclusion Scotland, using information obtained under the act to strengthen the case for better accessible housing for disabled people, are just two examples of FOI being used by concerned citizens campaigning for just outcomes in public policy- making.

BRENTWOOD, Tenn. — American HomePatient, Inc. (OTCBB: AHOM), one of the nation’s largest
home health care providers, today announced its financial results for
the fourth quarter and year ended December 31, 2009.

Revenues for the fourth quarter of 2009 were $61.3 million compared to
$67.8 million for the fourth quarter of 2008, representing a decrease of
$6.5 million, or 9.6%. Revenues for the year ended December 31, 2009
were $236.3 million compared to $266.9 million for the same period in
2008, representing a decrease of $30.6 million, or 11.5%. Medicare
reimbursement reductions effective January 1, 2009 reduced revenues by
approximately $6.5 million in the fourth quarter of 2009 and $27.4
million for the year ended December 31, 2009. Further reductions in
revenues in 2009 resulted from the impact of Medicare policy changes
related to coverage guidelines for positive airway pressure devices, a
change in inhalation drug product mix resulting from Medicare
reimbursement reductions, and the Company’s reduced emphasis on less
profitable product lines such as non-respiratory durable medical
equipment and infusion therapy. These revenue decreases were partially
offset by growth in sleep therapy revenue.

Operating expenses declined in the fourth quarter of 2009 compared to
the fourth quarter of 2008 by approximately $1.6 million, or 4.9%.
Operating expenses for the year ended December 31, 2009 compared to the
same period in 2008 declined by $8.0 million, or 6.0%. The decreases in
operating expenses for the fourth quarter and year ended December 31,
2009 were primarily the result of improved operating efficiencies and
the resulting reduced operating costs, partially offset by increases in
certain expenses associated with the development and implementation of
initiatives designed to provide additional productivity improvements.
Areas of focus have included centralization of branch functions,
consolidation of branches, improved routing and delivery systems, and
more effective utilization of leased space.

Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA)
is a non-GAAP financial measurement that is calculated as net income
excluding interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization. Adjusted
EBITDA (EBITDA excluding discontinued operations and debt restructuring
expenses) was $9.4 million, or 15.3% of net revenue, for the fourth
quarter of 2009 compared to $14.2 million, or 20.9 % of net revenue, for
the same period of 2008. Adjusted EBITDA was $32.7 million, or 13.8% of
net revenue, for the year ended December 31, 2009 compared to $51.6
million, or 19.3% of net revenue, for the same period of 2008.

Net loss for the fourth quarter of 2009 was $(1.2) million, or $(0.07)
per diluted share, compared to net income of $1.5 million, or $0.09 per
diluted share, for the fourth quarter of 2008. Net loss for the year
ended December 31, 2009 was $(13.1) million, or $(0.75) per diluted
share, compared to net income of $0.5 million, or $0.03 per diluted
share for the same period in 2008.

According to the American Heart Association, an estimated 81 million American adults have one or more types of cardiovascular disease (CVD).

Been scheming to kick up the conjugal-visit quota with your significant other? Heres a simple solution: Do more housework. Montclair State University [New Jersey] researchers had access to data on almost 7,000 married couples from the National Survey of Families and Households, and found that married couples who share chores tend to have more sex.
Since launching just three months ago, Flit.com , the first-of-its-kind online shopping tool that mimics the way people shop naturally — by visiting their favorite stores, much like they would in a mall — has changed the way retailers and shoppers interact online. Site upgrades that further streamline the shopping experience, combined with powerful word-of-mouth, have driven substantial site traffic growth and have made the site a home base for a growing number of dedicated “Flitters.”

For shoppers, Flit.com cuts navigation and search time by up to 80 percent, by doing in two simple clicks what otherwise requires remembering URLs and retyping search terms. According to the overwhelming feedback the Flit team has received from shoppers, retailers and industry analysts, this dramatic but simple difference has put the fun back in online shopping by making the experience more comfortable and easy.

– “Tag It”: This new feature lets shoppers capture any item in any store they come across while flitting and save it easily into their search trail. It replaces clunky alternatives like printing pages or battling with bookmarks. Items saved while flitting are marked by blue shopping bags below each store so they can be viewed and compared later. As always, busy shoppers can email a search trail link to themselves or friends to easily return to their shopping session later — or to get a second opinion.

– More categories: New apparel categories include designer and haute fashion, petites, swimwear, mens formal attire, and sporting-wear including yoga pilates, while broader merchandise categories include everything from scrapbooking to skiing to cellphones. Flit.com provides a carefully selected range of stores in each of these categories that specialize in the segment and provide quality shopping experiences across a range of price points.

Small businesses in the U.S. (i.e., fewer than 100 employees) are still feeling the effects of the global recession. The good news is that small businesses are not materially worse off in January 2010 than they were in January 2009. The bad news is that business conditions were dismal in both January of 2009 and 2010. The Decision Analyst surveys of over 6,500 small businesses indicate that the effects of the ongoing recession on small businesses are stabilizing. There are even hints in the survey data that economic conditions for small businesses may be improving in 2010. For example, more small businesses in January 2010 reported “very strong” or “somewhat strong” business activity than in January 2009 (22% in 2009 compared to 25% in 2010). However, a large number of small businesses went out of business during 2009, so their answers are not included in the 2010 survey data; this should temper our optimism.

Most small businesses in the U.S. are still planning to take steps in the next three months to control costs or reduce expenses.

“If an economic recovery comes in 2010, it will be partially driven by the actions of millions of small businesses in the U.S. Governmental policies and actions that encourage and inspire small businesses will tend to pay great economic dividends because these small businesses are so efficient, productive, and energetic,” said Jerry W. Thomas

Capsaicin, the active ingredient in chili peppers, is included in many fat-burners and preworkout products for its thermogenic effects, but can the pungent plant improve physical performance? Researchers from the University of Oklahoma (Norman) measured the [VO.sub.2] maxes (aerobic capacities) of 20 college students, along with their one-rep maxes on the bench press and leg press.

HONG KONG — Asia Entertainment Resources Ltd. (“AERL”) (OTCBB: AERCF, AERLF), a
VIP Room gaming promoter, today announced unaudited Rolling Chip
Turnover (as defined below) for February 2010. Rolling Chip Turnover for
the month of February 2010 in Macau was US$744.1 million, up 162%
year-over-year, compared to US$283.6 million for the month of February
2009. AERL Chairman Lam commented, “We wish our shareholders, partners,
and employees prosperity and happiness in the Year of the Tiger. We are
also pleased to announce that February 2010 was a record level of
Rolling Chip Turnover for our Company, despite the month having only 28
days as well as a major holiday.”

The Company’s VIP rooms are primarily focused on high stakes baccarat.
Baccarat accounts for approximately 88% of total Macau casino winnings.
AERL’s VIP gaming promoters’ gross win rate as a percentage of Rolling
Chip Turnover has historically ranged between approximately 1.1% and
4.5%. The industry average gross win rate for Baccarat is approximately
2.85% to 3.00%. Based on a statistical average of 3.00%, AERL’s net
profit before general and administrative expenses is typically 0.45% of
the Rolling Chip Turnover.

Theoretical win rates for AERL’s VIP gaming promoters’ VIP gaming room
operations depend on a variety of factors, some beyond their control.
The gaming industry is characterized by an element of chance. In
addition to the element of chance, theoretical win rates are also
affected by other factors, including gaming patrons’ skill and
experience, the mix of games played, the financial resources of gaming
patrons, the spread of table limits, the volume of bets placed by AERL’s
VIP gaming promoters’ gaming patrons and the amount of time gaming
patrons spend on gambling — thus VIP gaming rooms’ actual win rates may
differ greatly over short time periods, such as from quarter to quarter,
and could cause their quarterly results to be volatile. These factors,
alone or in combination, have the potential to negatively impact the VIP
gaming rooms’ win rates.

Rolling Chip Turnover is used by casinos to measure the volume of VIP
business transacted and represents the aggregate amount of bets players
make. Bets are wagered with “non-negotiable chips” and winning bets are
paid out by casinos in so-called “cash” chips. “Non-negotiable chips”
are specifically designed for VIP players to allow casinos to calculate
the commission payable to VIP room gaming promoters. Commissions are
paid based on the total amount of “non-negotiable chips” purchased by
each player. VIP room gaming promoters therefore require the players to
“roll,” from time to time, their “cash chips” into “non-negotiable”
chips for further betting so that they may receive their commissions
(hence the term “Rolling Chip Turnover”). Through the promoters,
“non-negotiable chips” can be converted back into cash at any time.
Betting using rolling chips, as opposed to using cash chips, is also
used by the DICJ (Macau Gaming Control Board) to distinguish between VIP
table revenue and mass market table revenue.

DALLAS — Although the 2009 holiday season was a challenging one for
specialty-food catalog and Internet merchants, it was significantly
better than the 2008 holiday season, according to the 5th
Food Group.

“Sales were stronger than almost any of us thought they would be,” says
Tony Cox, CEO, 5th Food Group. “Companies did a great job
reducing expenses without cutting essential service levels and marketing
programs.”

The season started slowly, with September sales down 7%, October sales
down 9% and November sales down 2%, but business came roaring back in
the last half of December, with sales for the month running 7% ahead of
the same time period last year. In the end, the companies 5th
Food Group tracks posted a 2% overall sales increase compared to a 6%
decrease during holiday 2008.

As a result of careful cost-cutting and conservative revenue goals, most
5th Food Group clients and other specialty-food direct
marketers’ profits were better than expected. A full 55% of the
retailers 5th Food Group tracks grew their sales between one
and 10 percent vs. last year (and some beyond 10%).

“We also saw the median catalog page count increase for the first time
in five years,” says Cox. “Things are definitely looking up.”

Being Bullied

> March 7th, 2010 ---

Of course its bad to persecute people, says Rod Liddle. But bullying has now become the latest politically correct public sector growth industry My Concise Oxford Dictionary defines bullying in the following terms: to persecute or oppress by force or threats. The charity at the centre of this latest furore about the Prime Minister, the National Bullying Helpline, meanwhile describes it thus, on its introductory webpage: Stress. Bullying. Workplace stress and anti-bullying advice for adults. Anti-bullying and Cyberbullying help for kids. Bullying help at Work. Anti-bullying in Schools. Anti-bullying in the Community. Cyberbullying. Stalking. Redundancy. Bullying Harassment Investigations. Workplace Investigations. Grievance. Disciplinary. Dis crimination. Dismissal. Suspension. Mediation.
It is not just the revelations about Gordon Browns bullying behaviour towards his staff which mark him out as a failed leader; it is his hypocrisy. No government in history has committed itself so firmly to standing up for suffering employees and, as Rod Liddle points out on page 19, this noble aim has often resulted in overbearing legislation. We have had employment acts which make it an offence for a boss not to make allowance for peoples desire to pray at work, and laws which forbid firms from advertising for a postboy on the grounds that it might discriminate against women and older people. We have had anti-bullying helplines and whistleblower schemes. Employers found by a tribunal to have failed to stop bullying face huge compensation payouts. And there is more to come: the government has made a priority before this parliament is out of passing Harriet Harmans Equality Bill, which will place onerous new demands on employers; requiring them, for example, to carry out equal pay audits to prove that they are not inadvertently discriminating against staff. Yet for all this bossiness about bullying, the PM himself appears to see no reason to treat his own staff with respect. This weeks nondenial denials about his behaviour merely draw attention to the allegations which have not been refuted: the foul-mouthed shouting and the claim that he removed a secretary from her chair and took over at the keyboard because he considered she wasnt typing fast enough. Browns inability to control himself in the office is worrying not just because it reflects badly on his character, but because it is symptomatic of a wider loss of control – not least of the public finances. But Browns reported rages are not just the result of frustration in the dying days of his government. Gordon Brown has been a bully throughout his career, indeed its the secret of his political success. When he realised that he would not beat Tony Blair for the Labour leadership after the death of John Smith in 1994 he began a 13-year war of attrition against his rival. When finally he succeeded in driving Blair into retirement he made sure, using threats and intimidation, that he would face no opponents in the succession. He must know that he is himself now guilty of the same charge of which he accused Tony Blair: remaining in No. 10 long after it should have become obvious that he is an electoral liability. The irony is lost on him.
TV presenter Sarah Cawood says she felt bullied and intimidated by the charity boss who sparked the Downing Street bullying row. Sarah, a former patron of the National Bullying Helpline, says Christine Pratt left her in tears after accusing her of failing the charity. “She was really pushy and I felt bullied,” said Sarah, a former Top of the Pops presenter and The Wright Stuff panellist. As a victim of childhood bullying, Sarah agreed to lend her name to the helpline last August. But Sarah saw another side of Mrs Pratt five months ago when she had to cancel a charity appearance where she was due to present a man of the match award at an ice hockey game in Swindon, Wilts, where the helpline is based.

Dear Dr. Gott: During the latter part of 2007, I was diagnosed with metastatic bladder cancer. My doctors recommended chemotherapy treatments from November 2007 to May 2008. I underwent surgery in June 2008 for removal of the bladder, prostate and two lymph nodes. In July, my kidneys failed, and that, too, was successfully treated. So far, so good. I am doing fine and have regained my weight back to 216 pounds. Unfortunately, the surgery has left me with numb feet — no pain, just numb. After several doctor visits, including trips to a neurologist, podiatrist and neurosurgeon, I have been told that this is a side effect from the chemotherapy. I would like to know whether you or any readers could recommend something that might help me. I read your articles every day and hope there is something someone can suggest to improve my condition. I do realize that I have been blessed to overcome this medical condition with only numbness in my feet as a residual. Dear Reader: Yes, you certainly have a lot for which to be grateful. To be a cancer survivor and to reverse or stabilize kidney failure is a testimony to your constitution and the superb care you received from your team of physicians.

3D imaging systems provider Digital Orthotics, Inc. — will lead a
discussion on advanced footwear orthotics at the Season of Life Expo, which
will be held March 20th at the Indian Wells Theater in Palm Desert.

Dr. Lowe will present the latest information on treating the underlying

“Its estimated that 85 percent of the population requires some form of
medical-grade corrective orthotic footwear, but less than one percent
receive such products,” said Dr. Craig Lowe . “By treating
the causes — rather than symptoms — of musculoskeletal disease, we can
reduce joint problems, prevent injuries, ease pain, increase stamina and
improve overall quality of life.”

Dr. Lowe went on to explain that bio-engineered ergonomic orthotics
developed with 3D imaging can also maximize body balance, energy and
performance.

VAN NUYS, Calif. — Valley Presbyterian Hospital is proud to announce the planned red-carpet
grand-opening on March 17th of its premier Amputation
Prevention Center (APC), an integrated limb-preservation center that is
one of the nation’s only facilities of its kind.

The center utilizes a rare and innovative team-based approach that pairs
podiatrists and vascular surgeons under the same roof – and has
significant ramifications for the growing number of people in the
country who are diagnosed with diabetes.

“This Center represents a major advancement in this crucially needed
area and brings together some of the very best talent, teamwork and
tools in the country,” said Gustavo Valdespino, President and CEO of
Valley Presbyterian Hospital. “There is no doubt that the exemplary
expertise and efforts at this Center will greatly improve success rates
for limb preservation.”

In the U.S., nearly 24 million people – or 7.8 percent of the U.S.
population – have diabetes. California alone has nearly 3 million people
with diabetes, meaning that more than 1 out of 10 adult Californians has
diabetes. And people with diabetes are far more likely to undergo foot
or leg amputations because many have circulation and nerve problems,
which make it easy to get ulcers and infections that may lead to
amputation, according to the American Diabetes Association.
